Chris takes great delight in watching his students progress into wonderful, aspiring musicians. This process cannot be rushed and requires dedication, and consistency in order to develop as a mature, confident and competent artist.
Students can opt to work towards exams; usually taken through ABRSM. For any not wishing to take formal exams there is the choice of a Performance Assessment which provides students with an attractive certificate and constructive feedback with no marks or grading involved. Exams and the Performance Assessment are not compulsory and it is absolutely fine to learn purely for pleasure.
Chris has over a decade of teaching experience; teaching various age groups and has prepared students for exams, auditions and recitals. He has a wealth of professional performance experience which he is able to use to enhance his lessons; most recently a solo voice recital in Derby Cathedral (June 2020), singing at De Montfort University graduation ceremonies (January 2022), acting as piano accompanist for Nottingham Hospitals’ Choir concert (March 2022) and organ accompanist for Burton Joyce Choral Society’s concert (May 2022.)
He has taught music professionals and previous students have pursued musical careers.
All lessons are tailored to meet students individual requirements and Chris works on building a firm technique; including Alexander technique. Students are encouraged to perform expressively and communicate the music. Chris' enthusiastic and patient approach helps create the ideal enjoyable learning experience.
He holds frequent student concerts to allow his students the opportunity to perform in a relaxed environment with an audience and gain valuable performing experience, should they wish to take part.
A member of the Incorporated Society of Musicians (ISM) and additionally an Accredited Music teacher for Derby & Derbyshire Music Partnership. In 2021 Chris was delighted to be accepted on Penelope Roskell's Piano Teachers Course focussing on Teaching Technique. Penelope is an internationally renowned pianist and teacher and professor of Piano and Piano Pedagogy at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and visiting professor at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.
